Overview

As part of our tax verification process, families may go through one of two pathways.

If your application prompts you to verify your tax information in Step 4, the steps may look slightly different but don’t worry, we’ll guide you through whichever version you encounter.

Pathway 1

Pathway 2

Pathway 1

1. Review Pre-filled Information

  • Click Begin Signing to open Form 4506-C.

  • Clarity will pre-fill most fields based on Step 1 of your application.

  • Confirm that your name, address and other details are accurate.

    • If changes are needed, make them before signing as you will not be able to edit once the form is signed.

2. Enter Required Fields

  • Each guardian must:

    • Enter their Social Security Number (SSN).

    • Provide their Signature at the bottom of the form.

3. Sign in Order

  • The form is completed one parent/guardian at a time.

  • If you’re the first parent listed, sign and click the Finish button at the top to submit your portion.

    After clicking Finish:

    • The page should reload and prompt the second parent to begin signing.

    • If it does not reload automatically, navigate to another page and return to Step 4 from your left menu.

    • Click Begin Signing to open the form for the second parent’s completion.

4. Edits & Support

  • If you added a second guardian or made changes to Guardian information in Step 1 after signing the form:

    • You will not be able to edit the form.

    • Please contact us directly so we can assist you.

Pathway 2

1. Create or Confirm IRS Account

Each guardian must have their own IRS account through ID.me.

  • If you already have an account, simply check the box to confirm.

  • If not, follow the prompts to create one.

Estimated time: 5 - 10 minutes per guardian.

2. Verify Your Identity with ID.me

Choose either Self-Service or Video Call to verify your identity.

  • You’ll be asked to:

    • Upload a valid government-issued ID (e.g., driver’s license or passport).

    • Take a selfie to confirm your identity.

  • Set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) to secure your account

3. Confirm IRS Account in Clarity

Once your IRS account is verified, return to the Clarity application.

  • Check the box confirming your account is active.

  • This will unlock the next step to begin signing the tax authorization form.

4. Complete the Tax Authorization Form

Each guardian completes their own copy of IRS Form 4506-C, one at a time.

  • Clarity will pre-fill most of the information based on your application.

  • Review pre-filled details carefully and make any corrections before signing.

  • Enter your Social Security Number (SSN) and Signature.

  • Click Finish to submit your portion.

Signing Order

  • If you’re the first guardian listed, sign and click Finish first.

  • The page should reload and prompt the second guardian to begin signing.

  • If it doesn’t reload automatically:

    • Navigate to another page, then return to Step 4 in your left menu.

    • Click Begin Signing to open the form for the second guardian.

Edits & Support

  • If you added or changed guardian information in Step 1 after signing the form:

    • You won’t be able to edit the form.

    • Please contact Clarity support for assistance.

5. Approve IRS Authorization Request

After signing, each guardian must log into their IRS account to approve the request.

  • You’ll be taken to the Power of Attorney and Tax Information Authorization page.

  • Scroll down and click Approve/Reject then select Approve Request.

  • Once approved, the request will show as Completed in Clarity.

I am not seeing an authorization request when I log in to my IRS account

If no authorizations appear on your IRS account, there could be a mismatch in profile information. Check your IRS profile and ensure that your name and address match what is showing on your Clarity account. If there is a mismatch, update the information and try again. If everything matches, reach out to Clarity support for further assistance.

On the Address page of the Clarity application (second page of the application, under the People section), you will see a question that asks if you filed your taxes at a different address.

If the address listed on your IRS profile is different than your current address, be sure to answer “Yes” to this question and add that address.

Alternately, if you already answered “Yes” to that question, but the IRS profile address actually matches your current address instead, change the answer to “No”

Essentially, if you answer “Yes”, the system will send that address to the IRS. If you answer “No”, the system will send your current address to the IRS.

I updated my name/address on my Clarity account, but still not seeing the authorization on the IRS website

While it is typically a pretty instant process, we have seen it take around 5 minutes for everything to go through. If you aren’t seeing it right away, give it even 30 minutes to be safe. If, at that time, you are still not seeing the authorization, reach out to Clarity support for further assistance.
